TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chief of the Law Education and Enforcement of the Metro Jaya Police Traffic Directorate Comr. Muhammad Nasir said that the new Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) will be able to reduce the use of private vehicles by 5,600 units.

"The MRT can transport 17,000 to 18,000 people per day, in a private vehicle there are two to three people, so it will reduce the number [of vehicle] up to 5,600 vehicles," Nasir said on Tuesday, June 18, 2019.

Nasir said that MRT will reduce the number of operational vehicles. "With the MRT, Transjakarta, and later LRT, will reduce traffic load," he said.

Nasir added that the implementation of the odd-even system in the capital’s main thoroughfares also helped to reduce traffic congestion. "Odd-even and open-close system is helping in the short-term, but for the long-term concept, there has to be a fundamental solution in building a transportation system," Nasir said.

A survey on the odd-even system conducted by the Research and Development Agency of the Transportation Minister during the 2018 Asian Games, the system has managed to reduce 24 percent of private vehicle users to public transportation users.

Out of the 24 percent, 38 percent prefers to use mass transportation system such as the Transjakarta, public buses, or the commuter line. Meanwhile, another 39 percent prefers to use online transportation services, and 7.5 percent prefers conventional taxi services.
